Last Wolfram Math Club Meeting
The Skiles Test Wolfram Math Club will have its last meeting on Tuesday, December 6, 2011. We will not hold club meetings next semester.
Students in our Wolfram Math Club assembled the rhombic hexecontahedron (Wolfram|Alpha’s logo) that we received from our friends at Wolfram|Alpha. Thanks again for your support! You can read the post from our interview with Keith on the Wolfram|Alpha Blog.
Zach’s Wolfram|Alpha Math Scavenger Hunt
- How many Scrabble points would you get by using the word “invented”?
- Subtract the number of clues in this hunt.
- Add the sum of 5678+679.
- Subtract the sum of 5678+678.
- Add the number of current iPad generations available.
- Add the solution for (3x3-2+4) - 3
This will give you the number for the day of the month I was born.
Wolfram|Alpha Math Scavenger Hunt
Tonight our club tried to solve my math scavenger hunt using Wolfram|Alpha to find the numbers needed to complete the computation. The computation was also done using another tab with a second Wolfram|Alpha opened in our browsers. Here was my hunt presented to the students:
- What is the elevation of Venice, Italy?
- Add the age of Mark Twain’s book Huckleberry Finn.
- Subtract the average number of hours it would take you to read a book with 600 pages out loud.
- Subtract the age of Johnny Appleseed when he died.
- Subtract the decimal form of the quotient of 14 divided by 5.
- This will give you Mr. Arnold’s age.
- What year was Mr. Arnold born?
Three of the students solved the final question around the same time, but one finished slightly before the others. Congrats, Antwan! Then, all of the students were asked to create their own Wolfram|Alpha math scavenger hunts. Those will be posted on our blog soon.
Our Wolfram Math Club students had the privilege to talk with Keith from Wolfram Research. He interviewed us for an upcoming post on the Wolfram|Alpha Tumblr. We had a great time and really enjoy the recognition received from Wolfram|Alpha staff. This is a video clip of the conversation from our end. Thanks, Keith!

Making Video’s
My favorite thing I have learned to do so far, is probably learning how to make videos on Screencast-O-Matic. I think it is very usefull, because you can make educational videos very easily, and can help someone learn about a subject. It is also fun to make videos!
